What Bristol County VINELink Covers
Massachusetts VINE, commonly reached through VINELink, is the public locator and notification interface named by the Massachusetts Department of Correction. The official instructions say that only MA DOC participates in the Massachusetts VINE program. That sentence controls every Bristol County search. The Bristol County Sheriff’s Office does not feed the House of Correction and Jail, Women’s Center, Modular Building, or Ash Street Jail population into this state VINE service. A person held only by BCSO may therefore have no VINELink result at all.
VINELink becomes relevant when a Bristol County case leads to admission into MA DOC custody. It may show a matching state prisoner’s custody status, agency or facility, identifier, and a Projected Release Date when DOC supplies that field. The same record may offer notification enrollment for a transfer, release, escape, or other custody event. It is not a permanent discharge archive. It also does not replace the court docket, an authorized DOC record, or the receiving agency’s record when the person moves between custodians.

Search Bristol County VINELink Records
Begin with a full first and last name or an MA DOC commitment number. The commitment number is the strongest match when it is known. A name can return more than one person, so compare the identifier and the listed facility before opening or relying on a record. CAPTCHA and interface prompts may appear. Those steps protect the live vendor search and may change over time.
- Open Massachusetts VINELink, confirm Massachusetts, and select the People search.
- Enter the full first and last name or MA DOC commitment number, then complete the CAPTCHA.
- Compare each result’s identifier, agency, and facility so a similar name is not confused with the intended person.
- Open the matching record and read its exact custody label, location, event date, and Projected Release Date if one appears.
- Record the exact wording and date. Then verify the destination through the court, DOC, parole record, or receiving custodian when needed.
A no-result screen is not proof of release. Check spelling, try the commitment number, and call the VINE service at 866-277-7477 if the person is known to be in MA DOC. If the last known place was a Bristol sheriff facility, switch to the Bristol court and BCSO path instead of repeating a state search that has no county-jail data.
Note: A Bristol jail-only stay is outside the official Massachusetts VINE participation statement, even when the arrest occurred in the same state.
Bristol County VINELink Result Fields
A matching result is a current or recent status display supplied through a third-party interface. Read only fields that are actually present. Do not infer a release day from an empty date box, and do not convert a projected date into a confirmed exit. Massachusetts uses several sentence dates, each with a different meaning.

Reading Bristol County Release Status
“Released” means departure from the participating MA DOC custody status shown. It does not always mean a return to the community with no legal restraints. Massachusetts release categories include parole, probation, home confinement, another criminal-justice agency, federal authority, immigration custody, a warrant, another sentence, and death. The destination matters as much as the status label.
A transfer from BCSO to MA DOC is not a community release. VINELink may become useful after the state admission is posted. Likewise, a later DOC release alert may mark a move to parole or another authority. Confirm the receiving status before arranging transportation or treating the event as a final discharge. A court order granting bail or personal recognizance is also different from the physical time when BCSO completes checks and opens the door.
Set Bristol County Release Alerts
Notification enrollment begins inside the correct person’s record. On the observed interface, the user opens Notification Methods, selects Add, and chooses among the methods offered. More than one method can reduce the effect of a missed call, filtered email, or changed phone number. Delivery still depends on source data and automated systems, so an alert should not be the only time-sensitive source.
- Open the verified MA DOC record and choose Notification Methods, then Add.
- Select email, text, phone, or another offered method and provide the requested address or number.
- Choose the language and add a second method when the interface permits it.
- Select Next, create a four-digit notification PIN, and enter that PIN again.
- Complete enrollment and respond to any separate account confirmation sent by text or email.
The four-digit PIN helps confirm receipt and manage the notification. It is not the same as a six-character account code that may arrive during sign-in or account confirmation. Keep both private. If a phone alert comes in, listen to the whole message and use the PIN only as the system directs.
Note: VINE notifications can lag or fail, so confirm an urgent Bristol County release with the agency that controls the custody event.
Bristol Victim Notification Registry
Massachusetts also maintains a formal Victim Notification Registry. It is distinct from following a public VINELink record. Eligible victims, witnesses, certain relatives or guardians, and other qualifying people concerned for safety submit an official application with support such as a police report, prosecutor summons, or advocate letter. The registry can cover specified transfers, moves to less secure custody, escape, and temporary, provisional, or final release.

803 CMR 9.00 governs covered notice events and timing. It includes advance-notice rules when they apply, but eligibility and exceptions control. No fixed notice period should be promised for every Bristol County custody change.
Missing Bristol County VINELink Results
A missing result has several possible causes. The person may have remained in BCSO custody and never entered MA DOC. The name may be misspelled, the commitment number may be wrong, the vendor data may be delayed, or an older released result may no longer be displayed. Massachusetts does not promise a fixed retention window for released VINE records.
For a Bristol jail case, start with the criminal docket in MassCourts. Read bail, recognizance, disposition, sentence, and probation entries. Then call BCSO at 508-995-6400 to ask whether the person remains in sheriff custody, while recognizing that staff may not disclose protected details. Do not subtract one day’s aggregate BCSO count from another. The sheriff homepage shows totals, including a “Not In Custody” count, but no names or release events. Those figures cannot identify a person.
Bristol Release Systems Beyond VINE
The correct locator follows the custodian. A sentenced federal person is searched through the Bureau of Prisons locator, which can display Released or Not in BOP Custody with a date. A federal result does not rule out another agency or supervised release. Federal pretrial custody handled by the U.S. Marshals Service may require the federal docket because USMS has no matching public historical locator.
ICE uses its Online Detainee Locator System for current custody and certain recent releases, not Massachusetts VINE. Bristol County’s former ICE contract ended in 2021, so the old Carreiro operation must not be treated as a current Bristol facility. An older BCSO record marked as a release to immigration describes a transfer of custody, not a return to the community.

Confirm Bristol County DOC Releases
Preserve the exact VINE label, date, identifier, and facility before checking a second source. A sentencing docket can establish the court’s order. An authorized DOC sentence-computation or release record can establish the administrative date and category. A parole record may explain supervision, while the receiving custodian can confirm a transfer. No single missing screen completes that chain.
When a former MA DOC record disappears, the Massachusetts DOC public-record route handles agency policies, aggregate data, and lawfully releasable records. Person-level information may be CORI, which is Massachusetts criminal offender record information. The subject’s own CORI or a properly authorized record path may be needed. A public life-sentence decision can document a Parole Board vote, but a grant still does not prove the person physically left custody that day.
For a county-jail stay, use BCSO and the originating Bristol court. For state prison, use MA DOC and Massachusetts VINE. For federal or immigration custody, use the federal system that received the person. That division keeps Bristol County release verification tied to the agency that actually created the record.
