Find Bristol County Release Dates

A Bristol County projected release date depends on where the person is held and what legal order controls the custody. A pretrial detainee may have no set day because bail, recognizance, court action, or a hold can change the result. A sentenced person has dates computed from the sentence, credit, and any lawful deductions. To learn when they will be released, first separate Bristol County Sheriff custody from Massachusetts state-prison custody. A projected date is still an estimate. It does not confirm that the person crossed the jail or prison door on that day.

Bristol Projected and Actual Release

A projected release date is a calculated future point based on the sentence record as it stands. It can reflect minimum and maximum terms, jail credit, earned deductions, parole eligibility, and later corrections. An actual release is the custody event that occurred. The two dates may match, but a projected date does not make that result certain.

Pretrial custody works differently. A person at Ash Street or the Dartmouth campus may leave after bail, personal recognizance, dismissal, or another court order. There is no sentence-completion date to calculate before conviction and sentence. Even after a court authorizes release, BCSO may need to finish warrant, detainer, identity, and processing checks. A detainer is a request or legal basis for another authority to hold or receive the person.

Scheduled versus actual: A displayed date is a planning field; the release transaction and destination show what truly happened.

Massachusetts also defines an “Actual Release from Sentence Date” for criminal-justice reporting. That term can refer to the end of the full sentence, including a parole-supervision part, after credits or later court action. It is not always the same as the day a person physically leaves a building to begin parole.

Find Bristol County Projected Release

The first task is to identify the custodian. Bristol County’s four named facilities are sheriff facilities, not local branches of MA DOC. Massachusetts VINE covers MA DOC only. A BCSO sentence that never becomes a state-prison commitment will not gain a public DOC date merely because the case arose in Massachusetts.

  1. Confirm the last known facility and whether the person is pretrial, serving a house-of-correction sentence, or committed to MA DOC.
  2. Read the Bristol court docket for the sentence, bail order, mittimus, and later changes. A mittimus is the court order that commits the person to custody.
  3. For MA DOC custody, search Massachusetts VINELink by full name or commitment number and record a Projected Release Date only if displayed.
  4. For BCSO custody, ask the court or BCSO for the proper authorized sentence or release record. The DOC locator cannot compute a county-only sentence.
  5. Check for another case, consecutive sentence, warrant, detainer, or transfer that could keep the person in custody elsewhere.
  6. Use an authorized DOC sentence-computation sheet or release certificate when the exact state calculation is required.
  7. Confirm the actual event with the releasing or receiving authority rather than relying on the forecast alone.

The official MA DOC search instructions state that only MA DOC participates in Massachusetts VINE.

Bristol Release Date Terms

Massachusetts uses several dates rather than one universal exit day. Read the label exactly. The MA DOC glossary separates a basic calculated Release Date from earliest dates, the controlling maximum, and the point when parole may first be considered. A person may reach a parole-eligibility date without receiving parole. A maximum date may end the controlling sentence while other lawful custody still exists.

Release Date
The calculated sentence date based on imposed terms without deductions that may later be earned; it helps form the actual release calculation.
Earliest Release Date
The earliest potential date after considering parole eligibility and deductions that may be earned.
Earliest Release Max Date
An earliest date based on the controlling maximum and specified deductions, apart from parole eligibility.
Maximum Date
The expiration point for the controlling sentence.
Parole Eligibility Date
The earliest point when parole consideration may occur, not a promise that parole will be granted.

The MA DOC glossary is the source for these distinct terms.

The captured glossary shows why an ERD, maximum date, and parole date should never be collapsed into one guaranteed Bristol County release day.

Note: Copy the full date label with the date itself, since the same day can represent a different legal milestone under another label.

Compute Bristol State Release Dates

103 CMR 410 assigns MA DOC sentence structure and date work to its Central Date Computation Unit. The process starts with the sentencing order and offense dates. Staff identify the controlling minimum and maximum across all sentences, apply lawful pretrial credit, account for concurrent or consecutive terms, and apply eligible deductions that were actually awarded.

Concurrent sentences run at the same time to the extent the orders permit. Consecutive sentences run one after another. A revised commitment, corrected mittimus, return from parole or escape, new sentence, or later court order can require a fresh computation. Parole eligibility remains separate from maximum discharge. The final physical release still depends on an actual order and custody event.

M.G.L. c.127, §129B governs credit for confinement while awaiting trial or sentence. That jail credit reduces time left after sentencing when it applies, but it is not earned good time. For a Bristol prosecution, the docket and mittimus show the judicial foundation, while the correctional authority applies the correct credit and release rules.

Bristol Earned Time Rules

M.G.L. c.127, §129D governs current program and activity deductions plus specified completion credits. For eligible state-prison activity, the law permits up to 7½ days for each qualifying program or activity per month, with a 15-day monthly maximum, as well as defined completion credits. House-of-correction amounts differ. Eligibility, satisfactory participation, demonstrated completion, sentence type, exclusions, forfeiture, and the awarding authority all matter.

The statute supplies an overall ceiling of up to 35 percent for the reduction of an imposed maximum or minimum through the covered deductions and completion credits. “Up to” is crucial. It does not mean each incarcerated person receives that reduction, and it is not a shortcut calculator. Mandatory terms and offense-specific restrictions may block or limit credits.

Massachusetts does not have a universal current rule that every person serves 85 percent. The post-1994 truth-in-sentencing framework ended the former statutory good-time system for later offenses, but eligible program and activity credits under §129D remain. A sound Bristol County estimate therefore uses the actual sentence, offense date, governing statutes, awarded credits, and all linked cases. Subtracting a fixed percentage from a sentence produces an unsupported date.

Bristol HOC Release Calculations

A sentence in the Bristol County House of Correction is not calculated through the public MA DOC locator. BCSO does not participate in Massachusetts VINE, and a person serving a county term may never enter state custody. Start with the Bristol docket and mittimus, identify credit for pretrial detention, and use the BCSO sentence or release record through an authorized path. Apply the house-of-correction provisions of §129D, not the state-prison monthly amounts.

Several local facts can alter the result. More than one Bristol case may create concurrent or consecutive terms. Another county, a warrant, or federal authority may hold the person after the BCSO term. A move between the main Jail, Women’s Center, and Modular Building at their shared Dartmouth campus is an internal movement, not a release. Transfer to MA DOC likewise marks a change in custodian rather than a return to the community.

The BCSO bail schedule is a pretrial processing schedule, not a sentence calculator. Bail or personal recognizance ends or suspends the present detention authority while the criminal case continues. It is not earned-time discharge. When the question concerns bail today, use the current court order and BCSO processing information rather than a projected-sentence formula.

Note: Name the exact Dartmouth unit when calling BCSO because a move between campus buildings can look like departure without being release.

Why Bristol Release Dates Change

A changed projected date is not automatically an error. The sentence record is recalculated when a legally relevant input changes. Some changes move a date earlier, while others move it later or replace the expected route with a transfer. The record should identify the authority behind the new calculation.

ChangePossible effect on release
Earned credit awarded or adjustedMay move an eligible projected date, subject to statutory limits and actual awards.
Pretrial credit correctedCan change the remaining term when the court or computation record fixes jail-credit time.
Revised mittimusChanges the commitment terms used in the calculation.
New sentence structureA concurrent or consecutive term can alter the controlling minimum or maximum.
Parole actionA grant, denial, rescission, or revocation can change release-to-supervision timing.
Warrant or detainerMay cause transfer or continued custody after the current sentence milestone.
Court or data correctionMay replace a displayed date after appeal, post-sentence action, or record review.

A parole grant authorizes parole subject to prerequisites and conditions. It is not the physical release record. A rescission reconsiders a positive vote before release, while revocation responds to an alleged violation after release. Another sentence or receiving authority may still prevent a return to the community.

Massachusetts Has No 85% Calculator

Massachusetts’ date vocabulary is unusually important for Bristol County. ERD, ERD Max, maximum date, parole eligibility, projected release, and actual release can identify separate stages. The state’s system resists the simple claim that one percentage predicts every exit. That is the central Bristol projected-release distinction.

In April 2026, MA DOC announced an internal tablet feature called Opportunities. It gives incarcerated people information about earned good time and timelines for maximum release and release to supervision. The public cannot sign into that tool. Its significance is narrower: MA DOC itself treats maximum discharge and release to supervision as different milestones.

The MA DOC announcement about the internal Opportunities tool describes that release-planning function. Family members and other public users must still rely on the public VINELink field, court records, and authorized agency records.

A Bristol HOC date remains outside the tablet tool and public state locator. It is built from the county sentence, credit, earned-time rules that apply to the HOC, and later legal events. The most accurate answer may therefore be a set of labeled dates rather than one day.

Confirm Bristol County Actual Release

A public VINELink record may show Projected Release Date for an MA DOC person. Preserve the exact label and identifier, then register for an event notification if appropriate. The Bristol County VINELink inmate search explains the state-only coverage and PIN process. An alert still needs confirmation because automated source data can lag.

For a state sentence, request the authorized sentence-computation sheet, release order, or certificate when precision is required. MA DOC’s records access officer handles state records only. For a BCSO sentence, use the Bristol court and sheriff record path. The Bristol County released inmate search explains how MassCourts, the clerk, BCSO, and receiving agencies fit together.

The MA DOC public-record request instructions show the state-only records fallback.

The captured route applies to MA DOC material, not records created solely by the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office.

Finally, identify the destination. Release to parole, probation, another criminal-justice agency, federal authority, immigration custody, a warrant, or another sentence is not the same as an unconditional return to the community. The actual transaction and receiving status complete the release-date answer.
